Undead - A sourcebook for Chill 3rd Edition horror RPG

Created by Matthew McFarland

In our third sourcebook for Chill 3rd Ed, we explore the Undead, creatures that return from the grave for love, revenge, or hate.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

I Promised an Excerpt - What Type of Undead Would You Like to See?
over 6 years ago – Wed, Oct 25, 2017 at 07:50:14 PM

So, as things stand, we're 50 backers from our next free case and a scant $2400 from funding, with a week to go. Going on experience from our past two Chill Kickstarters (SAVE and Monsters), we're very much on track - we made our goal for Monsters faster but the funding goal was also lower, so I'm not concerned.

I did promise an excerpt this week, and you've got some options. If you check out this article on Flames Rising (which I linked in our last update) you'll see that we've split the undead into some broad categories:

  • Vengeful: Undead that return for revenge
  • Unhallowed: Undead that return because they were improperly buried or honor after death
  • Forlorn: Undead that return for love
  • Possessive: Undead that return to guard, protect, or watch over something or someone
  • Bestial: Undead animals
  • Servitors: Undead that return under the control of another creature
  • Unbidden: Inhuman creatures of the Unknown possessing a human body; different from other undead in that there’s nothing left of the person whose body they’re using

So, tell me in the comments which one you'd like to know more about, and I'll post that excerpt when we hit $14000 (which I'm hoping will be today!).

300 Backers and Counting! Another Case Unlocked!
over 6 years ago – Tue, Oct 17, 2017 at 12:33:50 PM

Greetings, envoys! Moments ago, we reached another milestone - 300 backers! That means we've unlocked the third free case, this one to be written by Steve Kenson!

Steve Kenson is a staff designer for Green Ronin Publishing and owner of Ad Infinitum Adventures. He has been writing and designing in the RPG industry for over twenty years, working on such games as Shadowrun, Mutants & Masterminds, Blue Rose, and Icons Superpowered Roleplaying. A big fan of the original Pacesetter games, including Chill, Steve was a high-level backer of the Growling Door Games edition, creating SAVE Master of the Art Matthew Wandell. He maintains a website at stevekenson.com.

We're presently about $4700 from goal, so I have no doubt we'll hit it before our time is up (about two weeks!). I'd sure love it if we unlocked the last two cases, though, so spread the word for us!

Also, a couple of links for your to click:

First, I wrote a blog post for Flames Rising about Undead, in which I talk about our classification of undead creatures and why I made some of the hiring decisions I did.

Second, we're not the only revamped classic horror RPG in town! Chuck McGrew is Kickstarting a new version of Don't Look Back as we speak. Check it out!

I'm planning on post some excerpts from the Undead book this week and next, so stay tuned, spread the word, and watch the shadows - zombies can be sneaky!

Halfway to Resurrection!
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 13, 2017 at 04:35:01 AM

Greetings, envoys! As of now, we're just over halfway to goal, with the better part of four weeks to go. Based on the performance of the last two Chill Kickstarters, we should make our goal.

It would, however, be nice if we could make the goal before the last few days, so that we have some time to talk about additional content for the book. As such, if you've got friends who enjoy Chill and might like to put a character's name (or even a whole character!) into the book, or if your group would like to come play a custom-made scenario at Origins, Breakout, or Midwinter, maybe given those reward levels a look. (Heck, I'd add another one for GenCon if someone wanted it.)

Likewise, if you have friends who are fans of horror RPGs, point 'em our way! Let's get SAVE some new recruits!

Wait for a blog post next week where I talk about about the different classifications of undead we're using in this book!

And, as always, thank you for your support!

Ten Thousand!
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 13, 2017 at 04:28:56 AM

Great if you're talking about dollars, not so great if you're talking about zombies, but we're talking about both

(Sorry, it's very early here and I'm still mid-coffee. Expect me to be a little weird.)

Anyway! As of this morning we're at just over $10,000, meaning we're better than 60% funded and about $5800 from our goal. Likewise, we only need 26 more backers before our next free case. I'd really like to hit 500 backers this time and get all five cases unlocked, so make zombie noises at your friends and gamers until they back us. :)

Also: Thanks to the genius of Thomas Deeny, we've updated our character sheets, which you can download here. That bundle includes:

  • All of the pregen envoys to date.
  • Character sheets with rules reminders (including a printer-friendly black and white version).
  • An HQ sheet to keep track of your campaign's SAVE presence
  • A case worksheet for the Chill Master

Please enjoy! And spread the word - only 19 days to Halloween and the end of this campaign!

200 Backers! Next Case Unlocked!
over 6 years ago – Thu, Oct 05, 2017 at 12:50:56 AM

Greetings, envoys!

Wow, it's been a great 24 hours! We're closing in on 50%, and we just hit 200 backers, meaning that the inimitable Sarah Richardson is going to contribute a case!

Sarah Richardson is a game designer, layout and graphic artist, writer, and Marketing Director for Magpie Games. She is the author of the 70s girl gang RPG Velvet Glove and a co-author of the feminine horror RPG Bluebeard's Bride. She has written for The Complete Oracle, The Baby Bestiary 1 & 2, and Kult: Divinity Lost, and done layout work for Epyllion: A Dragon Epic, No Salvation for Witches, and the Cold Ruins of Last Life. You can find her work at scorcha.net and follow her on twitter as @scorchadoom.

I've had the pleasure of playing Bluebeard's Bride, and let me tell ya, it's a fantastic game. I'm really looking forward to what kind of horror Sarah can inflict upon some hapless SAVE envoys - but we've got about $9500 to go first! Spread the word!
